Kaia Gerber: Fashion’s Latest It Girl

Is Kaia Gerber the latest “nepotism model” or the real deal? The 16-year-old daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber began her modeling career at the tender age of 10, with an ad campaign for Young Versace. In 2017, she took the fashion world by storm, walking in shows for Calvin Klein, Alexander Wang, and Marc Jacobs, among others.

Her 2018 just got better — she snagged a coveted solo Vogue cover. The teen covers the February issue of Vogue Paris, wearing a 1980s-inspired pink Saint Laurent dress and fringed thigh-high boots. Noted fashion photographer, David Sims, shot the cover. This means that she’s bested her famous mother. Cindy Crawford didn’t score a solo Vogue cover until she was 20. Kaia Gerber also landed a major gig as the face of Calvin Klein’s Spring 2018 campaign.

In recent years, some controversy has arisen in the fashion world about so-called “nepotism models.” These children of famous parents — often with reality television backgrounds — used their fame and connections to create fashion careers. The most prominent examples are Kendall Jenner (“Keeping Up with the Kardashians”) and Bella and Gigi Hadid (“The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”).

Should Kaia be added to that list? Only time will tell, but the teen did receive near universal praise for her runway walk. Other famous progenies haven’t had the same luck.

Scoring a major Vogue cover, in addition to her top-notch runway work, indicates that Gerber will be around for some time to come.
