The world of fashion moves in a cyclical pattern. What was popular 20 or 30 years ago comes back into fashion with a slight twist to give it a modern look. Decades that have been joked about for years, like the 80’s, are coming back in style.
Perhaps it’s because we look back and see the sky high bangs and oversized shoulders pads and laugh. There were parts of 80’s style that were less laughable, admirable even. The 80’s was a time when large prints could be mixed with bright colors. Secondhand was also layered on to create one of a kind looks. Today, that is what is coming back, the ability to test the waters of print, color, and shape in layers. Other styles like the puffy, sagging sleeves are coming back paired with a faux leather jumper. It’s a new look that speaks to something familiar. Silhouettes that cling to the body and then flare into a fun bubble skirt, metallic fabric, and pinstripes are making their way onto runways.
Romanticizing a particular era is nothing new. We are now far enough away from the 80’s to forget the parts that we didn’t like, maybe not the hair, but a lot of the other things. Fashion, like many other creative arts, get inspiration from the past. As designers continue to reinvent the wheel, they’re creating clothing that will make the current era stand out. When we know where we have come from we can follow where we might be going.
