Some children can be negatively affected by standardized testing, with some seeing their cortisol levels spike on testing days, and others seeing it drop, which might lead them to disengage, according to data from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Baucom recommends taking the following measures to help students perform their best and overcome academic anxiety:

  1. Focus on rest
  2. Focus on nutrition by eating healthy, well-balanced meals
  3. Create designated study times
  4. Take breaks
  5. Practice mindfulness throughout the day

Parents, guardians and educators may play a role in student's success by practicing healthy communication, mindfulness practices or organizing times to focus and decompress.
