TIRED OF HURTING? 5 NATURAL REMEDIES THAT SOOTHE CHRONIC PAIN FAST

Chronic pain impacts nearly 25 percent of Americans, according to the CDC. And if you're one of them, you know its consequences all too well: When pain becomes a constant companion, it can interfere with everyday activities, sabotage personal relationships and seriously sap your wellbeing. And while pain-controlling drugs carry certain drawbacks, experts say natural approaches can dramatically ease the burden of chronic pain. Here, the best chronic pain treatment options get relief without the need for meds.

What is chronic pain?

Chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts three months or more. Some of the most common causes of chronic pain include injuries, autoimmune conditions and nerve damage (neuropathy) due to diabetes. But regardless of the underlying trigger, this health condition can trap sufferers in a vicious cycle.

"When pain lasts a long time, it can actually change how the brain and nerves work," explains Raj Dasgupta, MD, Chief Medical Advisor for Sleepopolis. "The brain becomes more sensitive and keeps sending pain signals even after the original problem heals. Over time, this makes pain feel stronger and harder to control."

Adding to the problem: There's no guarantee that drugs designed to treat chronic pain will do so in a meaningful way. "Pain medicines like NSAIDs or opioids can help some, but they often don't take away all the pain and can cause side effects," Dr. Dasgupta says.

5 natural chronic pain treatments

It's not always possible to erase chronic pain entirely, but a number of natural strategies can noticeably reduce discomfort. Here's what experts recommend to help manage chronic pain naturally:

A curcumin and boswellia combo

Both curcumin and boswellia (a.k.a. Indian frankincense) inhibit enzymes that produce inflammation and acute pain, according to Belgian researchers. And in a BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine study, people with chronic knee pain who took the combination experienced significant improvements in pain and mobility in 12 weeks.

Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, author of Pain Free 1-2-3 and a scientific advisor to Europharma, recommends taking three capsules of their Terry Naturally Curamin Pain Relief daily. The same supplement used in the study, it combines a highly-absorbable form of curcumin with boswellia that can help treat chronic pain.

A PEA supplement

"Hundreds of studies show that a natural compound called [palmitoylethanolamide] PEA dramatically decreases chronic pain of all types," notes Dr. Teitelbaum. Just a sampling: A research review in the journal Nutrients found that taking PEA relieves pain due to conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetic neuropathy and endometriosis. Plus, an Italian study found that the compound reduced pain and improved quality of life in fibromyalgia patients.

For chronic pain treatment, Dr. Teitelbaum recommends supplementing with 300 mg of PEA twice daily. Tip: Patience is key, since PEA can take three months to deliver its full effects.

Mindfulness meditation

"Meditation can be a powerful way to manage pain. It helps calm the mind, lowers stress and changes how the brain feels pain," Dr. Dasgupta notes. "Many people notice they can handle pain better and feel more relaxed after practicing it regularly." Indeed, study in the journal Annals of Behavioral Medicine found meditation can reduce chronic back pain, migraines, fibromyalgia and arthritis within eight weeks.

His advice: Try meditating for 15 minutes twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed to help treat chronic pain. "Evening sessions help you relax and sleep better, and good sleep helps reduce pain," Dr. Dasgupta says. "There are lots of free guided videos on YouTube to get started."

Acupuncture

"This treatment can calm nerves, promote healthy blood flow, improve sleep and reduce inflammation-all of which contribute to chronic pain in various capacities," notes Jamie Bacharach Dipl.Ac, Head of Practice and Medical Acupuncturist at Acupuncture Jerusalem. "Acupuncture can also dull pain signals, similarly contributing to chronic pain."

Treatment for chronic pain typically involves six to 10 acupuncture sessions, she says. And relief can be lasting: Experts at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center analyzed 39 studies and concluded that acupuncture reduced chronic pain for up to one year.

Tip: Your doctor may be able to refer you to a licensed acupuncturist. But if he or she can't, check the acupuncture referral service at Acufinder.com.

A whole-foods diet

"Eating whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish and lean meat helps fight inflammation, which can lower pain," says Dr. Dasgupta. "But processed and sugary foods can make inflammation worse, so it's best to limit those." His advice echoes that of experts reporting in the Journal of Clinical Medicine, who recommend that people with chronic pain avoid processed fare and focus on whole foods instead.
