Twitter overlord and Tesla (TSLA) - Get Free Report CEO Elon Musk is almost constantly interacting with his blue-bird social media app: liking, sharing, and tweeting things that sometimes get him into trouble. Most recently, a meme that Musk boosted targeted two marginalized communities -- one of which Musk is supposedly a member.
In 2020, Musk revealed his Asperger's diagnosis on an episode of SNL. The condition has been identified as an outdated term for the condition known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). So if Elon Musk has publicly admitted he's autistic, why is he liking a post that reads "sterilize autistic kids?"

The meme, which has been greatly misunderstood by many, uses the image of transgender movie star Elliot Page (on the right) wearing a pro-trans sweater to indicate that the phrase "protect trans kids" actually means "sterilize autistic kids." The meme, which ironically features Drake (left) to make its point, implies that autistic children are misidentifying themselves as transgender -- a dangerous ideology to support while there are numerous anti-trans bills in circulation across the U.S.
Based on a report in 2020, there is a significant self-reported overlap between gender diversity and autism, but there is no data suggesting that one is misdiagnosed for the other. The same report reveals that transgender and gender-nonconforming people are also more likely to experience schizophrenia, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
This isn't the first time Elon Musk, who has 142.5 million followers on Twitter, has liked or commented favorably on anti-trans content. Recently the platform came under fire for agreeing to host the anti-trans Matt Walsh Film "What is a Woman" on the first day of Pride Month -- a choice Musk himself weighed in on.
