ASK AN EXPERT: IS A TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK ALWAYS A BLOCKAGE OR MAY IT OCCASIONALLY BE A BRAIN HEMORRHAGE?

Transient ischemic attack is a warning sign that the person may have stroke in the future. This stroke can be either ischemic or hemorrhagic. In transient ischemic attacks blood flow to the brain is interrupted for small period of time either due to blockage or bleeding resulting in symptoms that are seen in stroke. These symptoms are reversible.

TIAs have three pathophysiological mechanisms as causes: embolic (caused by obstruction of an artery by an embolus), lacunar (induced by stenosis of a vessel) and low-flow (caused by obstructive atherosclerotic lesions). Hemorrhages usually progress to ischemia, which mischaracterizes the TIA.

The term “transient ischemic attack” is commonly used to describe a condition induced by a blockage in blood flow that results in ischemia. A minor brain hemorrhage, on the other hand, may occasionally resemble a transient ischemic attack.
